Can a non-US citizen receive a driver's license?

You need a car to drive to work, take your kids to school and run errands. However, you are not a citizen of the United States. You do not have the documents that US citizens bring to the Department of Driver Services (DDS) when they register for a driver's license.

As an immigrant, are you able to receive a driver's license in Georgia?

Driver's licenses for non-US citizens

You have 30 days to obtain a Georgia driver's license after you establish residency in Georgia. To be a resident you must:

  • Be employed in Georgia
  • Enroll your children in school within 10 days of starting employment, or
  • Live in Georgia for at least 30 days

If you qualify as a resident, and would like a driver's license, you must also be able to:

  • Prove lawful status in the US*
  • Pass a vision test, written driver's test and a driving skills test
  • Present a foreign driver's license or identification card to the DDS
  • Present original immigration documentation
  • Present your social security number, or an official letter of social security number ineligibility
  • Present other documentation required by the DDS - such as proof of a permanent address

*Unlike a few other states in the US, Georgia does not allow illegal immigrants to obtain a driver's license.

Preparing for licensing tests

Driving laws vary by state. In order to prepare for your licensing tests, study Georgia's driver's manual. You can find the driver's manual on Georgia's Department of Driver Services website.

The manual explains Georgia's laws, road signs and regulations. Information from the manual will be on your written test. You will also use this information during the driving portion of your test.

If you need help navigating the United States' complex legal system as an immigrant, consider contacting an attorney who can explain the laws to you, and support your interests.
